Mind, Intelligence and Spirit The mind is a collection of various classes of processes that can be studied empirically. To limit the field of mental processes we must follow the criteria of folk psychology. There are three kinds of mind: human, animal and mechanical. But the human mind is the paradigm or model of mind. The existence of mechanical minds is a serious challenge to the materialism or the mind-brain identity theory. Based on this existence we can put forward the antimaterialist argument of machines. Intelligence is a class of mental processes such that the mind is the genus and the intelligence is a species of this genus. The capacity to solve problems is a clear and definite criterion of intelligence. Again, like in the mind, the human intelligence is the paradigm of the intelligence. There are also three kinds of intelligence: human, animal and mechanical. Searle’s Chinese room argument is misleading because Searle believes that it is possible to maintain a sharp distinction between syntax an d semantics. The reasonable dualism in the brain-mind problem defends the existence of brain-mental processes, physical-mental processes, and non-physical-mental (spiritual) processes. Constitution of the personal project of life, self-consciousness and free volitions are examples of spiritual processes. Usually the intelligence has been considered the most important quality of human beings, but freedom, or the world of free volitions, is a more specific quality of human beings. I. The Concept of Mind Contrary to a long philosophical tradition, it is very important to emphasize that the mind is not a "substance" or res . If the mind were a substance its study would be beyond the empiricist domain of science and would belong to the extraempiricist domain of metaphysics. On other hand, if the mind were a substance it would be something individual. Nevertheless the mind is a collection of various classes of processes that can be studied empirically. These processes are just the so-called "mental processes", in such a way that we can suggest the apparently vicious circle statement: mind is the collection of the different mental processes. In order to avoid the circularity of this statement we have to describe the various classes of mental processes. Using concepts taken from the information theory we can distinguish, in the beginning, four main types of mental processes: 1) perceptions, i. e. organized reception of information, 2) memories or storage of information, 3) beliefs, that is, judgements about the received information, and 4) plans, namely, arrangements of information to act.

Family Culture And Traditions Essay

In our family, there are several cultures and traditions that play a very important role in defining our family values and cultures. These traditions and cultures have been passed to our parents from our grandparents. The two most vivid cultural patterns that are present in our family have been inherited by our parents from the blending of the culture from my maternal grandparents and my fraternal grandparents. The cultural patterns Every Sunday, our father always prepares supper for the family and he makes sure that we eat together as one family. This tradition has been there in our family for a long period and helps us to bond together as a family unit. Every night on the eve of my birthday or that of my siblings, our parents usually sneaks into our bed room and fills it with balloons which are stuffed with money and toys. My father usually writes several bunches of poems and leaves the written poems on our table. When we wake up in the morning, our mother usually prepares for us a birthday morning cake which we enjoy together as a family as we read the bunch of poems. Different roles in upholding the traditions During our Sunday’s family dinner/supper, my parents dwells on teaching us on the way forward in regards to behaviour and especially the use of courteous words such as ‘please’ and ‘thank you’. They discourage talking when the mouth is full as well as placing of the elbows on the table. Also during this time, my parents taught us the developmental skills like literacy skills when story telling during family conversations. During these conversations, my parents would learn more on our attitudes and interests. From these meals, my parents gauge our moods and needs thus helping us solve our problems in the end. My parents oversee the family to ensure that everybody attends to maintain the unity and stability in the family. The dinner table or birthday party is a significant place for socialization especially for the children. These act as prime setting for socialization regarding the norms and rules on values of the family and the acceptable behaviour. From the nutritional perspective, the children master what is considered acceptable; basically the foods and non-food materials. From the family dinners and birthdays, my siblings and I have discovered manners and behaviour restraints that the wider world requires. Through conversations of the family during birthday parties and family dinner, we learned of our parents’ interests and attitudes in relations to the world. We always help our father to prepare for the family dinner on Sundays. As the eldest, I helped my father prepare the foods and especially the desert and vegetables while my other younger siblings have inevitably prepared the table. The Purpose As part of our tradition, the family meal is a symbol of a shared family life. On Sunday’s, family supper/dinner acts to bringing us together in the family. This greatly leads to our social well-being at the same time providing predictable structure to our Sundays which is often reassuring especially psychologically. In our family, everybody is involved in this activity and this applies to the buying of food, preparations of food done by my father, making and laying the table, and finally serving of food. With all this participation, it is not a surprise that the provision of this  family meal is a classic demonstration that we love and care for our family stability and unity. From the initial stages of shopping to clearing the table, each member of the family participates in this exercise responsibly and this promotes family solidarity. The Reflection on the Tradition Though we have a happy family, we also experience our setbacks. At the end of the day, the members of the family who are already exhausted after a busy day at school or work and probably maybe irascible meet for a family meal or party. Hostility may arise perceived at the dinner/party table maybe because of the injustices and behaviour which is unacceptable. Refusal to eat, complaining about bad cooking or lack of appreciation on whatever served on the table are some of the things that can lead to these conflict at the dinning/party table. Therefore, family dinners and birthday parties have many positive virtues that are sometimes fought with strain and negative consequences which greatly depend on the styles of parenting. As a socially combining role, when we share a meal during birthdays or Sunday dinner, it brings people together in a network of reciprocal commitments and shared social relationships. As a tradition routine, Sunday family dinner prepared by my father has been most frequent planned ritual activity in our family which usually takes place in our family house. The family meal and birthday parties in specific have come to represent the dynamics of the family and overtime generations are complaining on its downfall. In the times of change, family meals and parties represented solidity and perhaps the complaint of the lost family may in fact be the response to feared exchange in the arrangements and frameworks of families. These family traditions still influence me to date. This is due to the fact that they provide a source of identity on top of strengthening the family bond. I believe that the families that engage in frequent traditional  practices report stronger relationship and unity than families that haven’t accepted rituals together. I will carry my family traditions in future because I view them as a way of offering comfort and security. This is because our family beliefs and rituals are the cure to the feeling that comes from our world which is fast-paced and ever-changing. It’s relieving to have a few constants in one’s life. Am also for the idea that these family traditions teach values and this is achieved by for instance through family stories where the value of education, life-long learning and reading is instilled; and through regular family dinners or parties, the centrality of familial togetherness is instilled. With all this in mind, I will definitely carry these traditions in the future.

Particularly, the last three decades of the twentieth century were of critical importance in the development of the various movements that promoted family values. The rise of evangelical leaders and conservative politicians served to bring family values to the consciousness of the nation. The Christian right leaders came together to support a different agenda that fostered family values. Leaders, institutions, and lay Christians who were in support of the conservative politics formed the Christian right. In the 1960s, there was a cultural revolution that threatened the moral standing of the Americans â€Å"The social revolutions of the 1960s, then, caused many white Americans to feel as though the nation had lost its moorings.† (Dowland 15) As a result, the Cultural Revolution motivated the Christian right leaders to emphasize the need for family values in the achievement of the American Dream. ADN on the other hand focuses on the diagnosis and the treatment plan. BSN program is designed and has a broader approach to the scope of practice to nursing. According to JACHO ( 2006)the competency for the nurses has defined as ‘determination of an individual’s skills knowledge and capability to meet the expectations. (JACHO. 006,Pg 394) The competency of the clinical nurse depend on their level of education thats the reason why BSN nurse are well prepared to meet today’s demands by functioning in a variety of settings and well acknowledged for the critical thinking, management, health promotion and leadership skills. (Finkleman ,Kenner, 2010,Pg133) To put light on the situation, one of my young male patient, was experiencing symptoms of dyspnea, professed sweating and chest pain ,his vitals were stable ,I came to a conclusion that he is having chest pain elated to possible MI. I administered the nitroglycerine sublingual ,started oxygen ,got baseline EKG,which happened to be normal. As I was waiting for the doctor to call me back ,my charge nurse who is a BSN, who walked in to the room and conducted a detailed assessment of the patient. She found the patient had swelling on his right lower leg, and on checking that leg she found that, patient is positive for Homan’s sign. When the doctor called back she explained her findings, and recommended a CT of the chest. CT scan showed , the patient had a PE. Patient was started on heparin and transfer to a higher level of care. Being an ADN I had good nursing skills but I lacked the insight to use the correct nursing process of assessment and limited my focus on chest pain, While on the other hand my charge nurse assessed the patient and took a decision based on her expert critical thinking and correctly communicated it to the doctor, thereby saving the life of the patient. The nursing process and teaching plan which an AND using is limited to their knowledge and encapsulated within the parameters of the employers policy and procedure. BSN’s are prepared to function and take independent decision in any kind of situation and can use complex, diverse teaching plan and nursing process not limiting to that recommended by their hospitals but within the scope of practice. ADN’s are responsible to take care of their assigned patients, but BSN’s can take supervisory positions like charge nurses and clinical resources, A study conducted by Dr. Christopher Friese and colleagues states that â€Å"nurses prepared at BSN level were linked to lower mortality and failure to rescue levels. Both BSN and ADN nurses use the same nursing process for the patient care for promotion of care ,but BSN due to their better level of better education they plan the care accordingly. Conclusion Nursing profession is very demanding due to complexity, advanced technology and the ever changing patient population. Nurses are required to keep up with this advancement to foster optimum health and better positive outcome for their patients and community. It is evident that baccalaureate nursing should be the entry level of nursing profession, as BSN are well prepared to meet the increasing demand for creating a positive client outcome and thereby reducing clinical errors and lowering mortality.

Monotheism In Hebrew history, there are many instances that show there is only one true God that the Hebrews worship. The worship of only one God is called Monotheism. Judaism is regarded by most to be the founding religion of God. A sign of monotheism is that Jews believed in a single, transcendent God who created the universe and continues to govern it. The same God who created the world revealed himself to the Israelites at Mount Sinai. When Moses went to talk to God on Mount Sinai, God had talked to the Israelites. He had told them that he was the God that had given them freedom from Egypt. God also gave Moses the Ten Commandments. The Israelites were about to enter the Promise land but before they could, the Israelites had to make a covenant with God. The Covenant was that they would only believe in God and no other gods. The Jewish people then would acknowledge God, agreeing to obey his laws; God, in turn, would acknowledge Israel as his particular people. The people had sealed the covenant by making an ark. This ark consisted of cherubs on top of ark with a sitting place between all the cherubs for God. Inside the ark would consist the Ten Commandments. The reason God had given the Israelites the Ten Commandments because the Canaanites had worshiped in false gods and God did not want the Israelites to fall into that trap. This was also to show how strongly the Israelites had believed in God. If you had broken any commandment, God punished you unless you had repented your sin or sins. God forgave people know matter what you did if you had asked for forgiveness from him. People had assumed that this God was the same God of Abraham, Isaac, and Joseph. The Israelites would go into battle carrying the Ark of the Covenant because they felt it was that God was with them and nothing could be done then to destroy them. One thing about the covenant, no one was allowed to touch it because touching the covenant meant seeing God and no man has seen God and lived. As time went one and the Israelites had finally settled in the Promise land, Canaanites had taught the Israelites how the farm. This was not good because they had started to establish techniques from the Canaanites. As time went by, the Israelites had started to worship the Canaanite gods. This was a big mistake on the part of the Israelites because it is like disowning God. God had already told the Israelites not to worship false gods, but they had gone and started to do this. In 850 BC, prophets started to preach against Canaanite gods and were insisting in exclusive worship of only one God. This was found in Deuteronomy. The main purpose of Deuteronomy is to enforce exclusive worship of Yahweh. This is what the prophets had preached. Deuteronomy also commands the extermination of the Canaanites. This was referred to as the "ban". The ban stated that had to eliminate all Canaanites and Canaanite beliefs. After some time of destroying the Canaanites, the Israelites were able to continue live a normal lifestyle without any pressure to worship other gods. Israelites had gone to worship in temples after everything had settled down. One day, the book of Deuteronomy was found when renovating the temple. Josiah had read this book and found that one of the laws was being broken. The Israelites had been worshiping in old Canaanites temples. This was considered wrong because they had the presence of false gods. So Josiah ordered that all the temples outside of Jerusalem had to be destroyed. So it was done and the only temple that remained was the temple in Jerusalem. The reason for this was because the temple was in the main city and could be easily overlooked and controlled, rather than having temples all over the place and not being able to control them as easily. These two examples show that the Hebrews did always believe in one God, even though at times they were persuaded to worship other gods. When it came down to it, Yahweh was the true God for the Hebrews.
